Advent Welcome Letter — First Community Church

▾
Dear Friends, As the days grow shorter and the season of Advent draws near, I find myself reflecting on what it means to wait — and to hope. Advent is not simply a countdown to December 25th. It is an invitation to slow down, to be present, and to make room — room in our schedules, our homes, and our hearts — for something that matters more than the noise of the season around us. This year, we will gather each Sunday of Advent around the theme of Light in the Darkness. I hope you will join us for our Advent candle-lighting series beginning November 30. We will also offer a mid-week contemplative service on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM for those who want a quieter space to reflect. I know many of you are carrying heavy things this season. Some of you are facing the holidays without someone you love. Others are struggling in ways you haven't shared with anyone. Please know that this community is here for you — not just on Sunday mornings, but in the in-between times. My door is always open. I am deeply grateful to walk this journey with you. With hope and gratitude, Pastor Michael Hendricks First Community Church

Writing Tips for Faith Community Communications

Guidance for administrators writing communications that inform, connect, and inspire.

✍️

Lead with the most important thing

Readers skim. Put your most critical announcement or message first — not at the bottom. If someone reads only the first paragraph, what do you most want them to know?

🤝

Write for the newcomer, not just the insider

Every communication may be the first one someone reads. Avoid acronyms and assumed knowledge. Spell out where rooms are, what programs are for, and who is welcome.

📅

Always include the five Ws for events

  • Who is it for?
  • What will happen?
  • When does it start (and end)?
  • Where is it located?
  • Why should they come?
💬

Pastoral letters: be personal, not perfect

The most effective pastoral letters feel like they came from a real person, not a committee. Use "I" freely. Share something genuine — an observation, a struggle, a moment of gratitude. Edit the draft to sound like you.

📱

Social media: shorter is better

Most people scroll past long posts. Keep social media content to 2–3 short paragraphs or less. Use line breaks generously. One clear call to action per post — don't ask people to do three things.

✅

Bulletins: review before you print

  • Are all dates correct?
  • Are event times accurate?
  • Is the contact information right?
  • Did anyone's name get misspelled?
  • Is the scripture reference correct?
🌍

Use inclusive language

Unless your tradition uses specific language, write in ways that welcome everyone. Avoid assumptions about family structure, background, or familiarity with religious practice. "All are welcome" means it in the words too.

🔁

Consistency builds trust

Communities that receive regular, well-organized communications feel more connected and informed. Aim for a predictable cadence — weekly bulletin, monthly newsletter — so members know what to expect.

📧

Email subject lines matter

For email newsletters, the subject line determines whether anyone opens it. Be specific and action-oriented: "Fall Festival this Saturday — you're invited" outperforms "October Newsletter" every time.
